What to wear – the ‘H’ Shape Body

'H' Shape

While the ‘H’ shape is lovely and balanced between the shoulders and hips, it also lacks waist definition. This is due to very little space between the bottom rib of the rib cage, and your hip bone that sits just out at the front of your pelvis. The closer they are together, the less waist you’ll have.

  1. The aim is to create the illusion of a waist while hiding the lack of it.

  2. Bring attention to your face with accessories and legs/feet with funky footwear.

  3. Empire lines are great for the ‘H’ as they sit at the narrowest point just below the bust and then skim past the waist elongating.

  4. Garment lines should be straight and uncluttered.

  5. Monochromatic colour schemes (similar colours just different shades worn at once) will elongate by stopping any obvious colour breaks in an outfit.

  6. Single breasted jackets with princess seams give a long, lean line through the waist. Tie any belt on a jacket up at the back.

  7. Tops that end just below the hip bone are usually the most flattering.

  8. Tunics that bypass the waist with leggings are a great option for elongating throughout.

  9. Work a column of colour (one colour down the middle with a contrasting one on the outside) to lengthen and narrow.

10. What to avoid… Anything boxy, belted, fitted, wrapped, cinched and tucked in. Avoid pleats and gathers at the waist and under bust line, no pockets at the waist – keep this area detail free!
