This winter offers an amazing selection of beautiful winter woollies. Expect to feel ‘toasty warm’ in luxe fabrications, which is what winter is all about! You’ll find varieties of mohair, wool, merino wool, cashmere, angora, and cotton.
As always, we’re seeing a massive variety in textures and styles: polo, ribbed & raglan sweaters, cable knits, slouchy fits, patch pockets, cropped, mid, and long line, oversized, fitted, zip-ups, and button-throughs & mock necks. This season truly has something for everyone.
Fabrication options…
Wool: The most common material for winter knitwear. It’s warm, breathable, and can be found in various types such as Merino, Shetland, and Cashmere.
Cashmere: A luxury wool known for its softness and warmth. It’s lightweight but provides excellent insulation.
Alpaca: Softer and warmer than sheep’s wool, alpaca is hypoallergenic and less likely to cause itching.
Blends: Many jumpers and cardigans are made from blends of wool with synthetic fibers or cotton to enhance durability, stretch, and affordability.
Styling Principles…
While the winter woolly trend is fabulous again this year, it’s not always easy to wear or pull off. Chunky jumpers and cardigans can add the appearance of extra weight and hide a slim, defined waistline and torso.
If you, like me, love and want to wear chunky jumpers and cardigans, pair them with slimline pants or bottoms to achieve a balanced look. This will instantly make you appear more stylish, modern, and less swamped by your outfit.
Consider proportions before worrying too much about your shape – proportions are even more important. When choosing an on-trend chunky knit, ensure your legs look significantly longer than your torso. We look well put together when dressed in the thirds rather than a 1:1 ratio. You can easily apply the half-tuck principle – simply tuck the hem of the knit behind your trouser waistband just at the front or side to shorten the garment.
This is where a shorter/cropped knit is great as you don’t have to try & work with something that is too long or big for you.
Petite individuals (under 5’4) can still enjoy this season’s chunky knits. Opt for cotton or fine merino wool with subtle or no texture and details. I own and love a cropped knit with cable details just on the arms. Avoid details, curved designs or textures where you don’t want to add bulk. Opt for a 3/4 sleeve as this will make your legs look longer.
Have fun with different necklines by matching them to your jaw & chin shape. Try polo, mock, V-neck, turtleneck, crew, cowl, zip, and round necks. Be mindful not to overwhelm this area of your body particularly if you’re a fuller-busted – choose the amount of fabric you’re comfortable with.
