As we say goodbye to autumn 2025 and step into a brand-new winter season, layering naturally becomes the focus of our wardrobes.
While summer dressing is quick, easy, and minimal, winter gives us the chance to really make the most of our wardrobe. And if you’re anything like me, a bit of a cold frog – you might find yourself wearing three to four layers depending on the day and where you’re headed!
Personally, I live in wool socks and singlets during the cooler months. Fine merino wool is one of my go-to fabrics – it’s warm without the bulk, and it’s also naturally sweat- and odor-resistant, which makes it incredibly practical. Even if it gets damp, it’ll still keep you warm and comfortable.
If your skin doesn’t tolerate wool (even the softer merino kind), modal is a brilliant alternative. Made from the fibers of the beech tree, this semi-synthetic fabric is incredibly soft, breathable, and silky to the touch. It drapes beautifully, feels cool on the skin, and resists shrinking, creasing, and pilling. Whether worn alone or blended with cotton or spandex, it’s a perfect layering companion in winter.
Winter Layering Tips to Stay Warm & Stylish
-
Start with a snug base layer – A well-fitted first layer helps trap warmth and prevents unnecessary bulk.
-
Mind your lengths – If your base layer is longer than your second, it can create awkward horizontal lines. Tucking it in adds both polish and extra warmth.
-
Place your layers strategically – Avoid layering pieces that cut across the widest part of your body (like hips or thighs) if you’re self-conscious about those areas.
-
Watch your fabrics – Thick, heavy textures add visual weight. Balance them out with lighter layers to avoid feeling bulky.
-
Opt for lightweight warmers – Sleeveless gilets, vests, pashminas, scarves, and cardigans are perfect for added warmth without the bulk and they’re great for indoor wear to keep your outfit looking intentional all day.
-
Layer for practicality – Layering allows you to peel off pieces as needed throughout the day while staying stylish and comfortable.
-
Try sheer or chiffon for mid-layers – These create interest without overheating, especially when adding 1-2 more layers over the top.
-
Play with colour – Experiment with colour combos for a fun twist or stick to a monochromatic palette with varied textures for a sleek, minimal look.
-
Top it off with structure – Finish with a coat or blazer to instantly elevate your outfit – perfect if you’re heading to a meeting, function, or special event.
