The Puffer Trend & Styling Tips
Vests, coats, and jackets in the puffer or quilted trend have long been fashion staples, seamlessly blending functionality with style. Here’s how to make the most of this cozy trend that I’ve been completely obsessed with for a few years! I have a puffer vest, two jackets, and a coat that I primarily wear with my active and casual capsules. Recently, I bought a caramel puffer from Uniqlo, and it’s become one of the most versatile winter staples in my wardrobe!
1. Balance the Bulk: Puffer jackets add volume & bulk to your upper body. Balance this by pairing them with slim or tapered bottoms like slim/straight jeans, leggings/active tights, or tailored trousers. Lean ectomorphs can successfully wear very bulky style puffers. But for most of us (endomorphs & mesomorphs) the less bulk the more flattering.
2. Layer Smartly: For a non-bulky sleek look, layer your puffer jacket over fitted clothing like short & long sleeve tees, fitted shirts, hoodies & fine merino wool jumpers. Avoid bulky layers underneath to prevent looking overly puffy & swamped – this is particularly important for petites, ‘V’ shapes & fuller busted women.
3. Waist Definition: Choose a puffer jacket/coat with a belted or elastic waist (like my long olive-green puffer coat) to create a more defined silhouette – these are best for the ‘8’, ‘X’ & ‘A’. This helps to prevent the jacket from overwhelming your frame & making you look boxy & wide at your best asset!
4. Length Considerations: Shorter puffer jackets are great for a casual or sporty look, while longer styles offer more warmth and are a good alternative to a coat or trench for a casual appeal. Choose a length that suits your height & vertical proportions and the occasion.
5. Play with Colours and Textures: Puffer jackets come in a variety of colours and textures. Bright colors and metallic finishes can make a bold statement, while neutral tones are versatile and timeless. Neutrals will always take you into the next year & beyond & mix & match better with other neutrals & colours.
6. Accessorize Wisely: Add a scarf, beanie, or gloves to complement a super casual winter look with your puffer jacket. These accessories can enhance your look when done in fun colour schemes & different textures.
7. Mixing Styles: Don’t be afraid to mix casual and formal elements. Pair your puffer jacket with a dress and ankle boots for a chic, unexpected combination.
8. Footwear Choices: Chunky boots or sneakers work well with puffer jackets for a casual vibe. For a more polished look, try ankle boots or knee-high boots.
9. Practical Features: Look for puffer jackets with practical features like hoods, multiple/hidden pockets, and water-resistant materials. These add functionality without sacrificing style.
10. Proportional Dressing: If your puffer jacket is oversized, keep the rest of your outfit more fitted/lean to maintain balance. Conversely, a more fitted puffer jacket can be paired with wider-leg pants for a trendy look.
11. Capsule: Build a winter capsule with your puffer coat (longer) or jacket (shorter) being the main/hero piece. Start with X2 bottoms, X5 tops & X2 shoes that all look great with your neutral coloured puffa. From there you can bring in additional clothing pieces that complement the existing capsule.
