Layering not only keeps you beautifully warm, but when done correctly, it can become one of your very best looks. The secret is learning how to layer without looking overwhelmed or swamped in fabric, colour or pattern. You still want shape, balance and personality in your outfits while staying deliciously warm. And of course, you also want to look fabulous once you start peeling layers off throughout the day!
Start With Your Base Layer…
Your base layer is incredibly important and ideally should be made from wool. Wool is naturally breathable, temperature regulating and wonderfully resistant to odour, making it one of the best fabrics for winter dressing. It also keeps you warm even if it becomes damp and has far less static than many synthetic fabrics.
If regular wool feels too itchy against your skin, fine merino wool is a much softer and more delicate option. And for those who still struggle with wool sensitivities like many of my clients, a cotton or rayon base layer can work beautifully underneath your garments while still keeping you comfortable.
The Second Layer…
Your second layer is where things become more interesting because this is often the piece that remains on display indoors. A soft long sleeve tee in merino wool can become one of the hardest working pieces in your winter wardrobe. Fine layers can even be doubled for extra warmth without adding bulk.
This layer can sit beautifully underneath shirts, jackets, blazers, coats, vests, cardigans, tunics or dresses. But most importantly, make sure this second layer actually suits you. It should be in a flattering colour, shape and style that you genuinely love wearing — because chances are, this may become the star of the outfit once outer layers come off.
If the outfit feels a little plain, simply add personality with a colourful scarf, statement necklace or soft shawl. I personally love my puffer vests in winter as it adds texture and interest without becoming too heavy indoors — and it’s a fabulous alternative to a scarf for a change.
The Outer Layer…
This is where your outfit truly comes together. Your winter coat, cape, blazer or jacket should complement the entire look while adding warmth, structure and style. Choose pieces you absolutely adore and can’t wait to wear.
One beautiful quality winter jacket can completely transform your wardrobe for years to come. In fact, some of my favourite winter outfits are built around the outer layer itself becoming the hero piece. I often wear a gorgeous wool jacket with only a simple cami underneath so I can comfortably keep it on indoors all day.
The key to successful layering is making every layer count — practical, flattering, warm and beautifully you!!
