The Slimming Power Of Great Styling

One of the most common statements I hear is… ”I want to look better & slimmer in my outfits?” So where do you start… ?

Firstly, start with a well-fitted bra. It’s one of the most important garments in your wardrobe and can completely transform the way your clothes sit. A supportive bra lifts the bust, helps define your waist and creates the illusion of a longer, more balanced torso.

Next, draw the eye upwards by wearing an eye-catching accessory near your face. A colourful scarf, statement necklace or brooch in one of your ‘signature’ colours naturally becomes the focal point. If you’re fuller busted, choose accessories with a little more scale so they remain beautifully balanced with your physical features.

Vertical and diagonal design lines are another fabulous styling trick. Think single-breasted jackets, open cardigans or longline vests that encourage the eye to travel up and down rather than across the body. Fabrics that drape beautifully instead of clinging will also create a softer, more flattering silhouette, particularly around the tummy area.

One of my favourite styling techniques is creating a column of colour. Simply wear one of your best darker receding neutrals or colours, such as navy, chocolate, charcoal, deep olive or black, underneath a lighter jacket, cardigan or shirt. This instantly narrows and elongates the body while creating a beautiful vertical line. It’s a styling principle I use regularly with clients who’d like to minimise their midsection, particularly those with H and O body shapes.

Consider a straight-leg trouser above almost any other style. They’re one of the most universally flattering trouser shapes & suit every body type/length & shape. They create a long, streamlined silhouette without overwhelming even a petite (under 5’4) & allow you to wear a little more volume through your upper body if you wish, creating better overall balance. Timeless & classic, they’re far less likely to date or tire over time.

Finally, don’t forget your footwear. If comfortable for you, a medium heel with a lower vamp can visually lengthen the leg. Choosing shoes that relate closely to the colour of your hemline, tights or trousers also creates a longer, more continuous line
