Shopping isn’t just about clothes – it’s a reflection of our values and who we are as a person. Before every shopping trip, I ask my clients to complete a clothing values questionnaire. This helps me understand what truly matters to them concerning the clothes they love to put on.
For Julie, (yesterday’s shopping trip client) three values stood out for her from the twelve categories:
1. Simplicity – Clothing that’s easy to wear, uncomplicated, and effortless to style.
2. Kinesthetic – Comfort, movement, and how fabric feels against the skin were a top priority.
3. Aesthetic – With a focus on beautiful clothing that is visually pleasing. Flattering, and harmonious colours, patterns & textures.
What would be important to you?
1. Bring a list – know what you’re looking for.
2. Set a realistic budget – and stick to it.
3. Have a plan – shop with purpose, not impulse.
4. Truely question each purchase – will it fill a gap in your current wardrobe?
5. Avoid shopping fatigue – take breaks/hydrate and stay focused.
Common Costly Mistakes to Avoid:
1. Arriving unprepared: Present yourself well (neat hair, light makeup if you wear it). You’ll feel more confident, and potentially new clothes will look better in the mirror.
2. Skipping the fitting room: Always try garments on before buying. Untried items often end up unworn, wasting money and space.
3. Taking only one size: Sizing differs between brands and styles – bring multiple options for a better fit and faster decisions.
4. Purchasing solely for the label: Designer doesn’t guarantee suitability. Prioritize colour, personal style, fit, & your physicality.
5. Buying ‘different’ for the sake of it: Change is great if it still aligns with who you are. Start small before you change how you would normally style yourself.
